Students having graduated from fields like Electronics, Telecom, IT, etc. are eligible candidates without any other exam qualification criteria. An M.Sc. degree holder in Electronics/Computer Science can also apply. The candidate should make sure that their degree course gets completed by the time of applying for the post.

The CBT exam carries negative marking (–1 for each wrong answer, +4 for each correct answer).

Minimum marks qualification criteria can only be seen as a beginning. The cut off will definitely be higher because of stiff competition in terms of 100 seats available. The selection will be done through the following stages:
- Computer Based Test (CBT) – Multiple Choice Objective Type (MCQ) with Negative Marking

In addition to basic pay, JTOs receive allowances as per BSNL rules. During the training period, a stipend/training allowance will also be provided.
The selection process consists of: (1) Computer Based Test (CBT) — an MCQ-based exam of 480 marks with negative marking, comprising 3 sections (Engineering Stream I, Engineering Stream II, and General Ability Test); (2) Document Verification; and (3) Medical Examination.
