The fact that there are 933 vacancies across the most prestigious services of the country makes this recruitment a once-in-a-lifetime chance for postgraduate level students. The category candidates, SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD have age relaxation and more chances to attempt the exam due to which this exam proves to be a very inclusive one.

🎓 Discipline & Educational Qualification

Indian Forest Service (IFoS)Bachelor’s Degree with at least one of the following subjects: Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, Agriculture, Forestry, or equivalent

UPSC Civil Services 2026 requires a simple graduation degree from any university that is recognized, and hence anyone who holds this requirement becomes eligible to apply irrespective of his field of study. However, for the Integrated Foundation of Services, the candidates need to study the science stream subjects during their graduation period. Candidates can also apply if they are in their final year of graduation.

📉 Minimum Qualifying Marks

UPSC does not pre-announce cutoff marks — the cutoffs are released along with the Prelims result after the examination. Category-wise minimum qualifying standards apply across all stages:

  • General/EWS: Higher cutoff (most competitive)
  • OBC: Moderate relaxation in cutoff
  • SC/ST/PwBD: Lower cutoff as per government norms

Examining the cutoffs for the past few years of UPSC Civil Services Exam Prelims will help the candidates have a realistic idea about how much they need to score and how much they should prepare. GS Paper-I is the crucial one that decides which candidates will be qualified for the next round.

You should always remember that you need to figure out your age with respect to 01 August 2026, which is the date stated in the notification. If you do not qualify in terms of age, then please do not apply.

⚙️ Selection Process

The UPSC Civil Services 2026 selection happens in three carefully designed stages:

  1. Stage 1 – Preliminary Examination (Prelims / Pre)
    • Objective type (MCQ) — 2 papers
    • Qualifying + Screening in nature
    • Only shortlisted candidates proceed to Mains
  2. Stage 2 – Main Examination (Mains)
    • Descriptive / written exam
    • 9 Papers total (2 qualifying + 7 merit-based)
    • Tests in-depth knowledge and analytical ability
  3. Stage 3 – Personality Test (Interview)
    • Conducted by UPSC Board
    • Tests leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
    • Final merit list prepared based on Mains + Interview marks

The civil services exam conducted by the UPSC is considered to be the toughest test in India. At each level of the examination, a huge number of candidates are knocked out of contention, and only the top candidates emerge successful in getting their names on the merit list.
